Pictured is a before and after of a beautiful Banksia tree that was destroyed by lopping. Unfortunately the tree didn't have enough energy resources left in the branches that remained behind, or nutrients in the soil for the feeder roots to access for the trees growth and survival. This tree was lopped in September 2024, the epicormic regrowth pictured was from January 2025 and by April 2025 the tree had died.

The damage from lopping can result in:

• The loss of energy from the indiscriminate removal of the canopy, with less leaves available for photosynthesis.
• Epicormic regrowth, which is rapid, weakly attached shoots sent out as a survival response to the damage sustained.

• Exposure to pest and disease infestation, or the formation of decay from the large, open wounds.
• Increased costs for future maintenance of the epicormic regrowth or removal of the tree if it dies.
